Abstract: 

Student engagement can be challenging in the online classroom. This educational session will assist the novice to expert faculty explore techniques to improve student engagement in their courses.  Topics included will be: Get them talking, managing live sessions, blabbermouths, not so painful test reviews and letting your students know you care.

Extended Abstract: 

SStudent engagement can be challenging in the online classroom for novice and experts. The question of how and where to engage student in the online realm has been widely debated in many fields, often leaving faculty perplexed. The online learning environment often has higher attrition rates as compared to in-person learning environments (Allen & Seaman, 2015; Boston & Ice, 2011). Student Engagement has been noted to decrease attrition in online studies (Bawa, 2016). Communication, collaboration, feedback, real-world relevance, and enthusiasm are all techniques that engage online students.  This educational session will assist the novice to expert faculty explore these techniques to improve student engagement in their courses. Time saving practices, tips, tricks and common pitfalls will be explored to assist faculty to increase student engagement. Topics included will be: Get them talking, managing live sessions, group projects, not so painful test reviews, scripting and letting your students know you care.
