Abstract:

What can your LMS do? How far can you stretch the functionality that is already built in? This session explores some of the ways to bring new levels of efficiency, accountability, and effectiveness to academic administration and student services using tools already available in most learning management systems (e.g., Canvas).

Extended Abstract:

Instructional designers and faculty in higher education are generally familiar with learning management systems deployed on their campuses, and know how to use them to accomplish their teaching and learning goals. We offer the radical suggestion that the LMS on your campus can be so much more than a course delivery platform!  Using the tools and technologies already present in most LMSs, and in conjunction with other tools such as Qualtrics, DocuSign, and others, we will share ways we have brought new academic management possibilities to our student services staff, thus 1) expanding their personal skill sets into online technologies, 2) providing them with efficient means to accomplish their job tasks, and 3) generating data for reporting and tracking all at the same time.  The ecosystem of the LMS is ready to grow beyond the borders of the virtual classroom, and is fully capable of providing wider services to the academic community of students, advisors, faculty, and administrators. Through a presentation threaded with discussion and Q&A, participants will the opportunity to actively learn from our recent experience in Canvas what kinds of workflows and processes can be improved by leveraging their own LMS.
