This session will look at the mistakes often made in online learning - from a planning perspective. We'll discuss common misconceptions about what's most important in a program, and talk about how to ensure participants avoid making the same mistakes so many have made before.
In my over 30 years of experience in higher educaiton and specifically distance and online learning, I think I've seen every mistake higher education administrators can make when it comes to online learning. Whether the programs are being delivered to increase enrollments or keep current enrollments - or both - the basics seem to be often overlooked. What are the basics? Understanding the vision and goals of the program, how it's going to be governed for quality, how policies and procedures are set and followed, who oversees quality in courses and how to ensure faculty are prepared to teach online (as opposed to using the LMS). These important factors sometimes get buried in the frantic hurry to get programs online, and schools pay for it at some point. This session will address the mistakes and pitfalls we often fall into, and suggest ways to avoid finding yourself in those same situations. We'll also talk about how strategic planning can help you avoid both. If you're in charge of online learning, or even just online courses, you don't want to miss this conversation.
