Rethinking Student Engagement with Generation Z Students

Session Time Slot(s):
Abstract:

Generation Z represents the generation of students born between 1995-2010. These students are very adept at using technology, but do not necessarily know how to learn using technology. Instructors often struggle with meeting the expectations of these undergraduate students, often categorized as digital natives. This workshop will explore how these students might best be engaged in online and blended classroom modalities.

Extended Abstract:

This session will engage participants in learning activities using personal devices (phones, tablets, laptops, etc). Group discussions will engage participants in exploring the learning characteristics and preferences for classroom engagement of Generation Z students. A Community of Inquiry format will be utilized to engage participants with the presenter, participants with each other, and participants with web content. We will explore current stereotypes of Gen Z students and how to more effectively engage students born between 1995 - 2010. A website will be utilized as the presentation tool and will provide links to research, videos, and additional readings on this topic. Modeling of active learning using technology and heutagogical concepts and strategies will be used. Research and readings will include the recent studies related to undergraduates and technology, research in pedagogy and heutagogy, updated readings related to Generation Z and current research that is being done with this group of students both in education and the field of marketing.
