Extended Abstract:

For students taking online courses, accreditors require that the institution provide the same level of student services as those on the ground (SACSCOC, 2014). To meet accreditation guidelines, meeting the needs of services for online students, an online advising division at a virtual campus was implemented. This service is essential to warrant students have access to timely academic support while minimizing risks associated with attrition. Through the implementation of “shadowing techniques” online academic advisors, engage in advising sessions with students, immediately they experience difficulties in an online course. A series of Early Alerts trigger online academic advising, these are electronic referrals initiated by faculty, and they address a range of situations students experience while in class. The data-driven actions capitalize on the collaboration between academic and student service divisions. Safeguarding service is provided to students promptly; online advisors are available across three-time zones. Advising is delivered using a multiplicity of channels including phone calls, emails, video conference, discussion forums and chat, in ways that empower students to be successful in their academic endeavors. This session discusses the framework utilized to implement a 100% online academic advising department for TCC Connect Campus —a new campus at Tarrant County College— to support non-traditional students, enrolled in eLearning, accelerated programs (Weekend College, 7-week, Monthly Starts) and Degree Pathways that afford students the opportunity to complete an associate degree in less than two years. Participants will receive information on the importance of implementing dedicated academic advising for online students.
