Extended Abstract:

This presentation will provide a model for implementing standardized online teacher and student training to create a success pipeline for online learners of all abilities. Presenters will discuss and demonstrate the “A to Z” process followed at University of New Mexico -Valencia Campus, including: creating a committee dedicated to online learning (The Faculty Online Teaching & Review Committee – FOTRC), building an online teacher certification course (EDUC 293) that all hybrid/blended and online instructors are required to successfully complete, putting into effect an Online Orientation course that all online students are requested to successfully complete, and, finally, providing wrap-around student services for the online student, including embedded support in the online class as well as supplemental online tutoring services. We will discuss the successes and obstacles of the program at UNM-Valencia as they have developed over the past five years, and provide what data we have to demonstrate the effectiveness of these initiatives.  We will also briefly support further initiatives in evaluation of online faculty, to ensure effective, timely, and “regular and substantive” instructor-student interaction.

SESSION OUTCOMES

By the end of this session, participants will:

  • Understand and be able to define the role of a committee dedicated to ensuring quality in classes taught in the online environment
  • Understand and be able to list the key learning objectives of a stand-alone training course for instructors who not only plan to teach online, but may also need to design and build an online course
  • Understand and describe the learning objectives of a stand-along orientation course/module designed for students to help them get a jump start in using the institution’s LMS
  • Appreciate and describe the logistical issues involved in creating training and orientation for all players in the online environment, including faculty and student “buy in.”
  • Understand and list the types of oversight and review required by various agencies (HLC and DOE) of all online courses and the faculty who teach them
