This session will highlight 12 pedagogical approaches commonly used in online courses, describe the value, characteristics, and applications of each approach. Attendees will participate in an engaging activity using beach balls and a pedagogical wheel to collaborate on solutions for online teaching challenges using design thinking process.
The purpose of this session is to help instructors, administrators, and instructional designers to identify pedagogical approaches available to them and use a variety of teaching strategies to help students achieve instructional learning outcomes.
At the end of the session, participants will be able to
-
List 12 common (traditional and emerging) pedagogical approaches
-
Describe the value and characteristics of each pedagogy
-
Name a few applications of each pedagogy in online teaching environment.
-
identify a solution provided by session participants that they could implement to their listed challenges.
The first 25 minutes will be an introductory presentation on a variety of pedagogical approaches. The presentation will start by asking all participants to reflect upon one of their favorite learning experiences. A handout showing pedagogy wheel with over 20 pedagogical approaches listed, linked with examples and resources will be given to each participant.
The presentation will cover:
-
What pedagogy is
-
Why understanding your pedagogical approach is important to every instructor
-
How your pedagogical approach is related to learning outcomes
-
Brief overview of over 20 pedagogical approaches and an introduction of 12 commonly used pedagogical approaches, including their definitions, key characteristics, and applications in online teaching.
At this point, participants will be directed to reflect back on their favorite learning experience and identify characteristics of such experiences and identify the pedagogical root behind such teaching arrangements.
Then next 15 minutes will be an interactive activity the whole audience will participate.
Everyone will be given a beach ball. On the beach ball, everyone will write their name and one online teaching challenge they are facing. Then everyone will throw or pass the ball to another participant in the audience and have them write a suggested solution to that challenge. This will repeat 3 times, so each challenge prompt on each ball will have three suggested solutions. At the end, everyone retrieves their own ball. Participants will have time to read the suggestions and choose one they are willing to implement and identify the pedagogy behind each suggestion.
This session will end with the last five minutes in questions and answers and wrap up.
Each participant will have the following items as takeaways from this session: 1. A handout showing a pedagogy wheel on over 20 pedagogical approaches and their use cas examples 2. A link to a shared google document for Resources on pedagogical approaches 3. A beach ball with each participant's identified challenge and suggested solutions from session participants
