Extended Abstract:

Corporate America has been growing the economy for thousands of years. They learned to be innovated, efficient, and early adapters of technology. So when it comes to educating its workforce, they have been on the forefront of course design, curriculum development, and learner improvement by being highly efficient, innovative and early adapters of technology. Corporate America was an early adapter of online education because of the economic efficiency it afforded a given organization. Many corporations for years had large training centers where they would fly in employees for training. They realized the cost and expense and had to look for a better training model. Online education, eLearning, and WBT became the tools out of necessary for some organization and innovation for others. The goal of this presentation is to share some of the best practices used by corporate America in course design that may beneficial to academia.

Participants will learn techniques used in corporate America for:

  • Course structure
  • Course design process
  • Implementation and evaluation process
  • Enhancing content

Many universities, colleges, and K-12 institutions do not have the budget, staff, and directives that corporate America has and cannot not mirror the course design process of educating it learners in the same manner, but they can implement some of the features and best practices that are not monetary driven and perhaps search out others that have free or reduce versions.

If you implement just one or two best practices you will be able to enhance your course design and create a better learning environment for your learners.

Every feature or best practice is not a perfect fix or will work in a university or college environment, but searching through the list there is bound to be some that will work, and that could be implemented. Your organization can be on its way to more engaging and innovating learning experience for its students.

This presentation will provided a list of course design features and best practices used by corporate America that academia could use to enhance the learner’s experience. The target audience is collegiate administrators, design managers, and instructional designers. The format of the presentation will be a slideshow where we will discuss examples of each feature or best practice.
