Abstract:

We create transformational online learning experiences for design and arts students through personalized, interactive, and media-rich environments. In this session, we will help participants explore how innovative instructional design practices can combine with design and arts thinking to enhance online learning across disciplines. This session is appropriate for all participants.

Extended Abstract:

In a world in which technology is increasingly ubiquitous, artists continue to struggle to find a sense of purpose, community, and humanistic value in digitally augmented spaces. At the same time, education experts and business leaders have identified collaboration, creativity, critical thinking, and communication as the cornerstones of 21st-century skills that should be embedded across all content areas. Herberger Online Learning is where these two worlds collide.

We provide innovative online learning experiences through active learning, collective participation, and personalization. Based on past empirical work, we have reason to believe this combination increases student engagement, retention, and learning even beyond the arts. We hope this approach will speak to all students, regardless of concentration, by translating traditionally unidimensional online learning into a multidimensional, media-rich experience.

With design thinking, creativity, and collaboration at the crux of social innovation, we have received several requests to share content and methods beyond the scope of a single course. By modularizing content, we have been able to empower students and faculty to construct personalized learning pathways in which they can access “just-in-time” learning materials. This has enabled content to spread beyond our curricular borders as we engage in community partnerships with health service organizations, civic practitioners, and businesses.

In this session, you will learn how we:

  • Create unique user experiences that immerse the learner in an interactive learning environment through the use of media-rich content and active learning experiences.

  • Develop an online learning environment in which to enhance learning in the creative process by leveraging personalized learning pathways.

  • Create transformational learning experiences that support the engagement of the affective and conative domains via active learning, social engagement, and real-world application of skills.

We will present multiple courses that demonstrate how we have used innovative instructional design best-practices to achieve these results. Throughout the presentation, we will pause for brief small group collaboration sessions to help you envision how these processes can be applied to your own learning environment. The goal is for all participants to walk away with strategies they can employ in their own online course development practice immediately, regardless of institution type, experience level, or job title.
