Extended Abstract:

Applied doctorates, such as the Doctor of Nursing Practice, Doctor of Business Administration, and Doctor of Public Health, are a growing sector of doctoral programs in the United States(Hanover Research, 2015). These programs often cater to mid-career, working adults and offer hybrid formats with varying residency requirements. American Public University System has recently launched two applied doctorates in Global Security and Strategic Intelligence with online coursework and face-to-face residency components as well as a practicum requirement. In this presentation, we will unpack the philosophy behind the two doctorates, their hybrid program structure, our curriculum mapping strategy, and admissions process surrounding these components. Further, we will emphasize the student experience we seek to create through strategically-placed experiential learning in the residency and practicum. We will explore the ways in which online coursework bridges the residency experiences, supports student preparation, and incorporates research milestones to prepare students for their dissertations.
