Effective teaching and pedagogical strategies/methods require consistent and intentional reflection and goal setting. Throughout my career as a Clinical faculty member and then Senior Teaching Professor for Xavier University Montessori Teacher Education, this guiding purpose has remained unchanged. Following this principle as a guide, combined with the refinement of teaching practice, continues to provide opportunities to engage with students and present content in new, innovative ways. Creating online courses and assignments within these courses requires establishing a consistent structure and diligence and utilizing on campus supports and seeking outside resources to expand best practices for online learning.

My goal in creating assignments for online courses, specifically, is to provide variety and meaning, creating meaningful and relevant assignments, providing multiple means for students to interact with content and one another.
My Montessori training and experiences bring another lens to the process of creating content and assignments aligned with the content. This discovery session will explore the application of Montessori pedagogical strategies, incorporating elements of the theories of universal design for learning, to create assignments that met course outcomes but also provide choice and variety to the student.
Participants will receive a checklist and template to utilize when creating assignments that follow the principles outlined above.
