Universities are becoming increasingly aware of the need for online learning experiences and classroom-based learning experiences to converge somewhere along the digital learning continuum. While each institution may have varying reasons to pursue this convergence, faculty face many of the same issues. At the heart of these issues is how to envision and develop a digital learning experience that they themselves most likely have not had as learners. This workshop will examine strategies, tips and lessons learned in engaging and motivating faculty to envision and plan digital learning experiences to bring about institutional culture change.
Institutions are becoming increasingly aware of the need for online learning experiences and classroom-based learning experiences to converge somewhere along the digital learning continuum. While each university may have varying reasons for pursuing this convergence, faculty across all institutions face many of the same issues. At the heart of these issues is how to envision and plan a digital learning experience that they themselves most likely have not had as learners. Another issue is that faculty have very limited time to devote to this effort. They need just-in-time and just-enough information and support to envision how to plan learning experiences that utilize technology in an appropriate manner. They also need the opportunity to contribute to the institutional culture change needed. This workshop will examine strategies, tips and lessons learned in engaging and motivating faculty to be digital instructors with the end result being development of a “game plan” containing the key components needed to build a digital teaching and learning campus culture.
As a result of this workshop participants will be able to:
- Identify faculty strengths at their institution
- Define the digital instruction mindset needed
- Utilize a phased approach to engaging digital faculty
- Develop a program of flexible faculty learning experiences that highlight best practices, core learning principles and instructional strategies
- Design an amplifying framework to build a digital pedagogy culture
This workshop will provide an opportunity for participants to examine the current digital culture of their institution and faculty perceptions of digital teaching. During the course of the workshop, participants will share experiences and brainstorm solutions for their campus. Simple and practical tips to establish and promote digital teaching and learning across campus will be shared.
