Audience Level:
Novice
Institutional Level:
Higher Ed
Abstract:

In this session, Dr. Addy Tolliver – Senior Instructional Designer at Southern Methodist University’s Center for Teaching Excellence - will share how SMU has been cautiously, but strategically moving towards more intentionally designed online courses and programs.

Extended Abstract:

After joining SMU in 2015 and its first Instructional Designer, the best way to describe SMU’s online course landscape was nonexistent. So were any policies and procedures related to online education. That made the job of an instructional designer extremely challenging.

However, for the past 3 years the university has slowly, but steadily recognized the potential of online courses and programs and have outlined an institutional structure for online course creation and delivery.

In this session, Dr. Addy Tolliver will share details of SMU’s journey in becoming a new player in the online education landscape. That will include sharing any challenges encountered as an instructional designer, as well as practical tips that can assist your university going from a place of no policies, to a place where courses can be designed and deployed strategically.
