Abstract:

Producing high quality video for online courses is a daunting challenge, especially when faced with an overwhelming amount of information. In this session we will break down the basics of videography, equipment essentials, and helpful tips for creating high quality instructional videos.

Extended Abstract:

Due to their constant exposure to high quality media, students are constantly raising their expectations for video...And when the quality doesn’t cut it, students won’t watch it.

Thankfully, video equipment is also becoming increasingly available to consumers at increasingly affordable prices.  However, with the overwhelming amount of information available about video production, sometimes it feels like the more you learn, the less you know. The goal of this session is to distill essential need-to-know information about video production in an academic setting, from a former professional videographer turned instructional designer.

The main goal of this session is to make video production less intimidating:

  • What do the various settings on my camera mean and why are they important for my video?
    • What is aperture and depth of field?
    • What is white balance and temperature?
    • What is shutter speed and frames per second?
    • What is color correction and toning?
  • How do you choose a location?
    • What makes for a good scene?
    • What makes for good lighting?
  • What about sound?

Together we will tackle the biggest challenges in video production and demystify the industry jargon to help you put together videos for your online classes that you will be proud of.
