Innovation in higher education is often hindered by adherence to traditional roles and teaching practices. At The Dartmouth Institute for Health Policy & Clinical Practice we are working to change that culture. Our team-based approach while challenging, is slowly changing the way we support students in their quest to change healthcare.
The purpose of this presentation is to help audience members capitalize on some of the lessons we have learned, and avoid some of the pitfalls in developing a new hybrid Master’s program. Topics we will discuss include:
· Design of the program
· Design of the rhythm of the week
· Articulating the needs of adult learners, in an online setting, with faculty who are used to
traditional face-to-face teaching methods
· Incorporating student feedback to improve course design and content in real-time
· Encouraging intentionality when planning materials for online courses
· Challenges in motivating subject matter experts to work with Instructional Designers to create
learning materials to meet the needs of online learners
· Challenges in finding the right collaborative tools to facilitate the exchange of materials/ideas
A course development case will be presented to the participants which incorporates the above points. Participants will be encouraged to problem solve with the presenters on possible solutions as well as sustainability ideas. Participants will be offered 3 key planning tools that were utilized during this development and delivery process that can be modified to be used in other institutions.
