Innovative and Transformational advising approaches ensure Student Success at MCCC

This session will illustrate how Mercer County Community College's organizational restructuring of advising services have been transformed to provide students with a just-in-time community of support. MCCC's purposeful organizational and campus cultural revision buttresses the institution's three strategic goals: ensure student success, expand Innovative partnerships and invest in Organizational and Professional Effectiveness.

This presentation will walk through the bold steps taken to address retention and completion, and student services that include technology-integration, Guided Pathways, professional development, communication action plans, assessment and collaborations. Advising is available on-campus, by phone and online.  MCCC’s revisioned advising includes:

Professional development

  • Student Success Advisor Training – online student advising training was developed for all advising staff to complete.
  • Self-Service Student Planning training- academic planning
  • Advisor Trac training- to track student advising visits and appointments

Adoption of a tiered shared advising model that supports faculty advisors and academic program coordinators

  • Part time advising professionals
  • Success Coaches
  • Student advocates

Student Clusters - To best serve our student body we have identified and set up Student Clusters in our learning management system to support our intrusive and active advising approach.

Technology Use

  • Use of Blackboard learning management system to offer advising training and monitor student clusters.
  • Use of Student Planning, Advisor Trac, video conference for online appointments.

Accountability

  • Technology integration allow MCCC to track how, when, and where students are served, and it enables users to share information, communicate and plan seamlessly
