Recently, the tools required for wide implementation of lecture capture have experienced major steps forward. This session, focused on the experience of Indiana University, will engage their collaboration technologies department along with camera, encoding appliance and media distribution partners, outlining challenges, available solutions, and the future of lecture capture.
While the benefits to lecturers and students are well known and the mediums to distribute video materials are mature; the implementation of sourcing, capture, distribution and publication of high quality lecture materials has been limited by budgets and available technologies.
Recently, those tools required to allow the wide application of lecture capture throughout classrooms has experienced a major step forward, with “open options” allowing broad interoperability and lower prices reflecting an established technology. With cameras, video encoding technology, and media management solutions reaching a point of maturity, the goal of “lecture capture everywhere” is quickly becoming a reality.
Looking to provide a solution that would offer greater device and distribution flexibility, Indiana University has embarked upon a mission to retrofit 500+ classrooms with the products and software needed to offer students—both in-class and online—high quality, value added recordings of their lecture material in a timely and consistent manner. James McGookey, Manager of Collaboration Technologies at Indiana University has experienced numerous challenges, setbacks, successes and advancements in maintaining the IU campus as one of the foremost “wired” institutions in the nation.
In this moderated panel session, McGookey and manufacturers of essential components in the field of lecture capture will address the specific challenges faced at Indiana University, the applicability of these situations to higher-education at large, the state of implementation throughout the college & university system, and where lecture capture/lecture distribution is moving next. In addition to addressing questions from the live audience, questions will also be sourced from clients and colleagues at educational institutions ahead of time.
