Abstract:

At the State University of New York (SUNY) Empire State College, administrators, faculty, and staff offer our diverse students a unique opportunity to study in a variety of modalities including in-person group study, independent study opportunities, residencies, blended, and online courses. Instructional designers, educational technologists, and faculty take a proactive approach to reviewing and making our courses accessible to all students while also supporting faculty’s ownership of the courses and their ability to keep courses up-to-date to ensure high academic standards. This practice, however, opens the doors for modifications in courses that may make them inaccessible. To proactively address potential accessibility issues, in January of 2014, a team at SUNY Empire State College developed a practice we call “Emergency Accessibility Review.” The Emergency Accessibility Review process is a powerful tool for achieving a perfect balance in keeping our courses in faculty’s hands but making sure content is up-to-date and accessible.
