Abstract:

Institutions exploring CBE can benefit from the experience of a growing number of schools that have piloted and then expanded CBE programs. Based on case studies of five programs across two- and four-year schools, this presentation shares lessons learned and emerging best practices about preparing curriculum, training faculty, designing a coaching and student support structure, and implementing the right technologies to produce a successful pilot CBE program.

Extended Abstract:

As more colleges and universities explore competency-based education, they can benefit from the experience of a growing number of schools that have piloted and then expanded CBE programs.  Based on case studies of five programs across two- and four-year schools, this presentation shares lessons learned and emerging best practices about preparing curriculum, training faculty, designing a coaching and student support structure, and implementing the right technologies to produce a successful pilot CBE program.  Participants will learn about common challenges these schools faced and what they identified as key success factors for the early stages of their CBE programs.  In addition, participants will learn how schools assessed the opportunity and made the necessary resource and investment decisions to grow their CBE programs beyond the pilot stage.
