Abstract: 

We’ve all experienced the frustration of balancing production deadlines with the need to devote time and energy toward proper design principles. This session will show you how to incorporate project management principles and techniques into your instructional design practice. The  additional structure provided can produce tangible benefits for both team members and stakeholders.

Extended Abstract: 

This presentation will help you understand the key elements of project management methodology and provide practical tips on applying project management techniques to the development of instructional design projects.  

Project management techniques can help instructional designers develop high-quality learning materials that meet expectations for time, budget, and quality. These techniques can set expectations, provide a clear purpose for the project, identify and plan for potential risks and problems, and improve communications among team members and stakeholders.

After this session, attendees will:

  • Understand the Project Management Institute's (PMI) five project management processes and knowledge areas and how they correspond to the basic analyze, design, develop, implement, and evaluate processes of the ADDIE model of instructional design.
  • Be able to develop documents to help plan and control your projects

Attendees will receive a set of templates for project management documents such as a project charter, project plan, work breakdown structure, communications plan, and risk management plan.
