Media can be a great learning tool or a detriment and stumbling block. We will gather participant concerns about media usage, address the concerns, and share examples of good media usage on various budgets.
There are many media options to enhance the educational experience but how much is too much? When does it become a distraction or even a stumbling block? How do you know when to use media and what type to use? When is the cost of building the media worth the effort and time to build it? We will share our findings and examples to help answer these questions.
We will review best practice guidelines for the use of media objects in online courses to ensure intentional and purposeful outcomes.
We will explore concerns that participants have with the use of media and share an array of media solutions we have found to improve learning in our courses. We will share how we have moved beyond the recorded lectures of the past to an interactive, supportive learning environment using a variety of media options. Purposeful, intentional use of media assets allows for support of individual learning needs while enhancing the experience of all students.
We will share:
-
how we have used media to address faculty concerns about losing the face to face magic in their courses
-
how we have increased understanding of former pain points in the courses
-
have used it rightsize the work within in the credit load of the courses
Finding intentional media based solutions for needs in courses from language, to the sciences and social sciences to business is a challenge that we've tackled with rewarding outcomes.
Level of Participation:
Attendees are encouraged to bring media questions or pain points from their courses to brainstorm solutions with each other and the presenters. Participants will walk through a media usage best practices checklist to review their use of media in their courses. They will see varied media solutions that have been implemented in higher education courses and be able to ask questions about creation, implementation, and accessibility.
Session Goals:
-
Discuss the pros and cons of using media in the online environment.
-
Share varied media options to enhance learning and support exploration.
-
Work through best practices for use of media assets in educational settings.
