Abstract:

This Express Workshop on "Championship Cultures" will dive into six championship cultures and include an exercise on evaluating your own organizational cutlure as well as how to apply best practices from some of the 'most-winning' teams. Can you guess who they are?

Extended Abstract:

Dynasties are often created when winning sports cultures are sustained, and when we truly study the playbooks of some of these dynasties, just as in top-performing organizations where we find fully engaged CEOs and BoDs, there are coaches who have perfect vision and alignment regarding, 1) who they are, 2) why they exist, and most importantly, 3) how to get there. Surprisingly, it's team character and player behaviors, not winning, that tops the cultural leader board. When coaches (a.k.a. leaders) operationalize their thoughtfully crafted philosophies, they drive team culure ... which in turn, drives behaviors ... which translates into records for the record books.

A few championship coaching cultural teasers:

  • Follow three rules:
    • 1. Do right; there's never a right time to do the wrong thing, and there's never a wrong time to do the right thing.
    • 2. Do everything to the very best of your ability. When you join a team, you have obligations and responsibilities.
    • 3. Show people that you care.
  • You don't have to "like" one another, but you do have to share the same core values.
  • When you're through learning ... you're through.
  • Focus on building character and not your reputation.
  • Build leaders at all levels.
  • Keep your eye on the spirit and not on the scoreboard.
  • Hire for the best team fit.
  • Always be improving ... never rest on your laurels.
  • As a leader, you have to perform at a higher level than anyone else.
  • Empower your team to make decisions.

Mission and core values are common threads found in successful cultures. Attendees are encouraged to bring a copy of their respective organizational mission and values to the Express Workshop to discuss. Dr. Stein will share the National Security Agency's (NSA) mission and core values as found on www.nsa.gov, and highlight what championship behaviors look like when demonstrating NSA values: Committment to Service, Respect for the Law, Integrity, Tranparency, Respect for People, and Accountability.
