Abstract:

Usually I teach digital storytelling in a three day workshop.  My challenge was to transform the face-to-face workshop into a hybrid model, delivered over four weeks.  I'll share my course design decisions based on hybrid course design theory.

Extended Abstract:

In this presentation you’ll find out how I decided to choose between online and face-to-face activities, building the online community, maintaining instructor presence and make the LMS space visually appealing. Hybrid course design meant focusing on the core interactions: learner-teacher, learner-content and learner-learner.  Sharing my strategies may help others who are building hybrid courses.  Attendees will walk away with ideas to transform their face-to-face courses into hybrids.  Although the LMS I used, Schoology, has differences from other LMSs, the tools are common to most academic LMSs and should be easily translatable.  Finally, even though this course was given as continuing ed/professional development, it could easily be expanded into a college course.  I have taught digital storytelling as a course at UMBC, The University of Maryland, Baltimore County.
