Abstract:

Showcasing a learning experience design example that embraces the Adaptive Micro-Learning model into a unique design of the learning pathway and study roadmap. It is specially tailored for a five-week summer online course that contains an extensive amount of instructional content, lecture videos, and learning activities for a large class.

Extended Abstract:

In this session, we will demonstrate how Adaptive Microlearning can be effectively integrated in the learning experience design to enhance online student learning experience. A unique learning pathway and study roadmap designed to guide student’s learning will be presented. The audience will learn how this model boosts student engagement and enhances learner’s online learning experience. The concrete strategies and tools with the Microlearning structure will be shared during the presentation.

In addition, we will showcase the process of facilitating a faculty member at UC Irvine to develop a European Studies course online with the focus of Adaptive Microlearning. Serval challenges were experienced during the course development period

1. Faculty Onboarding: The faculty had never developed or taught an online course

2. Massive volume of course content:  The faculty member was unwilling to adjust or decrease the content or activities

3. Short Course Delivery Period: The course was only five weeks long

4. Large Class Size: About 100 students were enrolled in this course

5. Technical Training: Prepare faculty to use new technologies to record lecture videos, teach with LMS, and host live webinar/office hours.

Serving as the instructional designers/teaching consultants, we will discuss our experience forming a cohesive partnership with the faculty to co-develop an online course. The faculty will also share his experience developing his first online course with the assistance of an instructional designer. In addition, he will provide tips tricks, and lessons learned from teaching this course. Tools used in this course:

LMS: Canvas
Lecture Recording:  Zoom
Course Overview Video: Green screen studio
