The Minute Paper Moves Online: The Current Role and Future Direction of Online Classroom Assessment Techniques

Background: Classroom Assessment Techniques are widely used formative feedback tools in face-to-face courses. To date, these tools are not yet widely used to improve teaching and learning experiences in online-delivered courses. Many educators/instructors who would benefit from implementing such tools are either unaware of their existence or uncertain how to efficiently and effectively implement classroom assessments in online environments. Due to the number and diversity of apps and tech tools, other instructors and instructional designers may be unknowingly implementing online classroom assessments. This session will serve as a platform for open dialogue about the current role and future direction of online classroom assessment techniques.   

Approach and Presentation Outline: Through this session, the presenters will share their experience with a pilot project implementing online classroom assessment techniques in online undergraduate and graduate courses. This session will systematically and progressively address the fundamental elements of classroom assessment techniques in alignment with our project while allowing ample time for open informal interactions, dialogue, and discussion. Our content outline includes: 

1. Definition and description of the original, face-to-face classroom assessment techniques
2. Benefits and barriers to online classroom assessment technique implementation
3. The presenters' experience implementing online classroom techniques in undergraduate and graduate online courses

Provided Materials: The presentation slides and supplemental resource handouts elaborating on each of the primary presentation topics above will be posted on the conference website for easy retrieval.
