Abstract:

Traditional assessment tools fall short for real world skills that don't always have an exact answer.  The industry standard is to then simply mark the learner complete and wish them good luck.  Come see how the State of Utah has created an active shooter scenario based assessment that applies the skills taught in the lesson where the leaner can travel down one of seventeen possible paths.

Extended Abstract:

The State of Utah has created an Active Shooter training customized for our needs. Unfortunately, due to the material content, there is not an effective way to assess the learner using a test since any real world application will be completely dependent on the variables and conditions that are happening in the moment.  Many times there is no RIGHT answer.  To address this issue, we created a video scenario where the learner has to navigate a building using the skills and concepts that were taught in the lesson.  There are 17 possible endings; including seven calls to 911, which the learner then has to remember facts about the scene and report accurate details. We also include a timer element on each decision to recreate making split second decisions.  By using this assessment style we can more closely recreate a hands on experience which will increase retention and prepare the learner for live drills or real-life events.  We also created a contigent path for anyone requiring a screen reader or has an ADA need.  Come see the scenario and then learn about the steps, difficulties, and learning moments that we experienced as we worked on this project.
