So You Want to Write About Higher Education

Abstract: 

This session will prepare you to get your higher education writing published. Topics include developing a writing practice, generating ideas, self-editing, query letters, and identifying ideal publications for submission. 

Extended Abstract: 

You know that voice in your head that's been whispering to you about writing and publishing? It's time to start listening. Your voice is needed. 

Writing about higher education is a great way to network, flex your creative muscles, and to provide service in our industry. This session will cater to aspiring, new, and veteran writres. In addition to learning specific skills to develop as a writer, you'll also have the chance to connect with a community of writers who can help support your future writing work. 

Session Outline

  1. Why Write: Writer and Higher Educator Karen Costa will share the story of her writing journey, pointing out lessons that she learned along the way. 
  2. Generating Ideas: Using a variety of strategies including freewriting and brainstorming, you'll generate a list of at least five ideas that you can start writing about today.
  3. Self-Editing: Learn how to polish your work prior to submission. 
  4. Query Letters: Examine examples of winning query letters that you can use as a model.
  5. Identifying Ideal Publications for Submission: Access information on higher education publications accepting submissions. Learn how to best position yourself for acceptance and get tips on building positive relationships with editors.

It's time to share your ideas with the world. This session will help give you the courage, motivation, and skills that you need to start writing and publishing.
