So you want to use video in your course? The first question to ask yourself is what is the pedagogical purpose of the video? Hint - everyone is doing it is not a good answer! In this practical session, you will learn how to put pedagogy first when deciding to use video in your courses. This session is based on the thoughtful work done by the Instructional Video Committee made up of managers, learning designers, programmers, and multimedia specialists from Penn State. Our committee’s mission was to define the types of instructional video, establish a common language around instructional video, explore pedagogical principles for using video in instructional environments, and propose best practices for using instructional video to the University community. The resulting deliverable is a website which details 20 different ways to use video in instruction that supports pedagogy. The guide provides both low cost and higher cost video examples with teaching points to help anyone learn the pedagogy behind. the videos This tool will be demonstrated in this session and made available to participants afterward as a resource.
During the session, we will explore 5 distinctly different types of video that are broken down into 20 unique ways that video can be integrated into an academic course or training sessions for instructional purposes. You will also learn 10 best practices for instructional use of video no matter which type of video you choose to integrate. In addition, if you don’t have a big media budget or access to a video professional, you will learn where to look for free or low-cost resources for looking professional while doing it yourself.
