Special Session:

Abstract:

In this 45-minute session, we will discuss the concept of collaborative learning in the online environment, an intentional course design strategy to foster motivation and effective ways to maximize collaborative learning that leads to learner success.

Three takeaways for participants:

  • Identify variables that cause online collaborative learning failure or success
  • Apply practical strategies to maximize online collaborative learning
  • Apply an intentional course design strategy to foster motivation that leads to learner success
Extended Abstract:

As educators, we usually talk about increasing our subject matter’s intrinsic appeal to learners (i.e., interest, relevance, value, applicability, etc.) so learners can engage more in the class to achieve more.  However, we may find our role as “herder of cats” when learners bring a variety of goals or values that do not match our goals or values.  In this 45-minute session, we will discuss the concept of collaborative learning in the online environment, the intentional course design strategy to foster motivation and effective ways to maximize collaborative learning that leads to learner success.

Three takeaways for participants:

  • Identify variables that cause online collaborative learning failure or success
  • Apply practical strategies to maximize online collaborative learning
  • Apply an intentional course design strategy to foster motivation that leads to learner success

Ideas to interact with the audience:

I plan to start with an engaging video on "herder of cats" that may arouse audience's curiosity on the topic.  Then, we will have a brief discussion on the definition of "collaborative learning" in the online environment. I will also consider to including a quick digital polling on student motivation strategies in order to make the discussion and presentation more relevant to the audience.  During the presentation, I will pause for some questions on the new concept "intentional course design" and encourage the audience to talk to their neighbors for idea brainstorming.
