Abstract:

Open SUNY’s Institutional Readiness process is designed to help campuses assess their readiness for delivering quality online programs using the OLC Quality Scorecard. Learn about the changes that have occurred on 12 SUNY campuses as a result of this process and discuss the process with three campus experts.

Extended Abstract:

Open SUNY’s Institutional Readiness (IR) process is a three-part campus consulting engagement designed to help campus leadership teams assess their readiness for delivering quality online learning programs. It is facilitated by expert leaders in online learning, using the OLC Quality Scorecard. The process engages a broad representation of campus stakeholders in a self-assessment using the 75 indicators in the OLC Scorecard. The culmination is the identification and documentation of best practices, along with an Implementation Plan for improving the remaining 75 items, written by key campus constituents and approved by the campus president. Open SUNY has been facilitating the IR process for SUNY campuses since April 2013. In spring 2017, a study was conducted to determine how the IR process has impacted campuses and to ensure that the process is effectively meeting campus needs. The results of the study revealed that the IR process influenced changes to campus resource allocations, organization/governance structure, policies, technology infrastructure, and campus planning. The specific findings will be shared briefly to provide context for the panel discussion.

The majority of the presentation will consist of a panel discussion with online learning leaders from three SUNY campuses who completed the IR process. They will share their experiences and explain how the process has benefited their campus online learning goals. The panelists will discuss strategies for successful change management as well as challenges they faced during the process. Participants will be able to glean insights into ways that they can leverage the OLC Quality Scorecard to influence changes at their institution.

Presentation Goals:

  • Describe the structure of the Open SUNY Institutional Readiness (IR) process
  • Identify ways that the IR process/OLC Quality Scorecard has influenced campus change
