Extended Abstract:

At the end of the session, the learners will have the ability to:

  •  Build a custom interactive activity in Articulate Storyline
  •  Use Storyline’s Tab Order system to create 508 compliant slides
  •  Apply various techniques improve the efficiency of using the Tab Order System
  •  Recognize the elements of Storyline that interfere with tab ordering
  • Use workarounds as necessary to overcome the elements of Storyline that interfere with tab ordering

Articulate Storyline is a great tool for design teams trying to create super engaging modules full of custom interactions. However, out of the box, Storyline is not great at making those custom interactions accessible. In addition, the time it takes to try and add the 508 compliant elements can make you want to simplify your course in order to fit the 508 guidelines. Luckily, there are solutions that let you keep your interactions and still be accessibility friendly.

In this workshop, we will go start to finish through the process of building a 508 friendly custom interaction. Along the way, you will become familiar with Storyline’s tab ordering system as well as the bugs and elements of Storyline that can trip up the process. We will also focus heavily on tactics you can use to make this process more efficient enough to use throughout a module without a ton of extra development time.

By the end of the workshop, the goal is for you to be both inspired and have the skills to go forward and create innovative new types of interactions that can work for ALL learners.
