An important aspect of cultivating student achievement, in both face to face and online environments, is getting students engaged in the learning experience. This session takes a look at creative (often simple) options for low stakes assessments, why they are important, and how faculty can apply them to their courses. We will discuss how assessment can promote student interest, drive learning, and provide valuable feedback to both the student & the professor.
While "Blended Learning" is not the focus of this session, it does apply to those interested in blended learning. Assessment For Learning is a key cog in the Blended Learning concept. Many flipped/blended models need simple, quick, quality ways of assessing students before, during, or after class. This session will highlight ways to quickly assess and be able to provide timely feeedback during instructional time.
Planned interaction(s) with attendees: This is an interactive session which solicitates audience participation & discussion. It is primarily on Prezi with a public link accesible after the conference for attendees. It includes video, demonstration, and engaging/motivational speaking. During the session all ideas, links, & resources will be pre-loaded and tweeted out. Round table discussion will be encouraged and prompted by the presenter as well as Q&A opportunities and active participation on #OLCAcelerate in order to share thoughts with others at the conference.
*Note it could be conducted as an express workshop or pre-conference workshop if needed/wanted with attendees selecting and designing & demonstrating their own assessments using the tools & ideas discussed.
Session Objectives:
- Evaluate strategies for student engagement and provide opportunity for low stakes assessment.
- Explore how to use low stakes assessments to provide valuable feedback to both the student & the professor.
