Using augmented reality to enhance a Universities existing academic resources by combining learning multiple levels of Edgar Dale's Cone of Experience and Howard Gardner’s Theory of Multiple Intelligences. Gett beyond the text and into the learners memory by having them read, hear, see, and experience the resources available.
The number of academic resources required to support the various skills and technologies used in Academia today is increasing and the new generation is beyond just reading a handout or a computer screen. Augmented Reality (AR) offers the opportunity to provide students with audio, visual, interactive, and motivational support anywhere at any time. The online student can point their phone at their screen and gain additional insights into content which feels personalized for them. These resources can also be utilized by the campus community allowing for maximum exposure for these materials.
Knowing that students and faculty are resistant to change, creating augmented reality enhancements can be done slowly and announced only once a vast majority of the resources have been enhanced. These academic resources and foundational documents are the building blocks of good pedagogy and clear expectations. Most Universities are now discarding these documents in favor of instructional videos. This session dives into the benefits of combining these documents and videos together and creating a modern learning experience. Through augmented reality, learners retain more knowledge while also continuing to have that document to hold (for those who want/need that) and have an enhanced experience available that they can take anywhere with them.
This session will examine augmented reality enhanced academic resources and:
- Offer examples of what is being done
- Evaluate the research for and against
- Discuss the actual and potential benefits
- Consider the future of AR in academia and online
