Abstract:

This presentation will equip session participants with a roadmap on how to create a visual design of lecture content using effective authoring tools that increases student engagement and the online learning experience.

Extended Abstract:

Multimodal learning in the online environment is contributing to the rapid growth in the demands for online teaching and learning. Integration of effective authoring tools within a supportive learning platform can help instructors create dynamic and engaging material for the student experience. The presenters will provide an interactive session using demos and hands-on learning activities that focus on integration of several authoring tools within a self-built Learning Management System (LMS). Participants are invited to bring their own devices of choice to this session. Participants also need to have access to wifi connection or cellular 4G/LTE with fast broadband.

The session will begin with a brief survey of the audience’s demographics and teaching styles. Next, presenters will provide a brief demonstration of each authoring tool and how it can be used by teachers/practitioners to effectively implement into their online or hybrid courses. Then, the presentations will introduce two learning scenarios (one in the humanities and the other in the basic sciences) and ask participants to approach them based on a combination of tools that is responsive to the lesson’s outcome. Following this, participants will freely choose a “station” (table) that will be presented with at least two authoring tools and will join others in a small group discussion about their assigned lesson scenario. Each group will also have the opportunity to interact with the authoring tools (some devices will be provided with preloaded authoring tools ready to use).  At the conclusion of the session, each group will post their recommendations and feedback (via electronic submission) on the session’s shared space to be a learning resource for session participants.

This presentation will be guided by three preliminary and important questions:

a. Which features improve online engagement and retention with the authoring tools used?

b.  What was the selection criteria for tool integration between user and content?

c.  How are tools adapted from original recommended use to maximize technology?
