Abstract:

Whether working with instructors in higher education, k-12, or facilitators of training, you have probably come across those who are cautious around the technology. Maybe you are transitioning from a traditional classroom to instructional design, development, and support. This session is a roadmap to upskill you to the next level.

Extended Abstract:

Join us as we unfreeze our Jurassic users and transform those cave drawings into engaging and organized online environments! While challenging to work with you need to remember they were chosen to teach, lead, and share their wisdom as experts in their field. They may be frustrated, afraid of failure, and do not want to look inept in front of their audience, peers, or leadership. They are also likely to be experiencing "Cognitive Overload" which leads to fears that freeze them in the time before learning environments were delivered online using technology. Even pre-pandemic, these self-proclaimed dinosaurs were crying out for your help. You will walk away with three proven strategies that provide solutions. Together, we will explore strategies to tap into your strengths for identifying and gaining access to the "dinosaurs in your room". In this interactive session, we will delve into your own experiences to craft stories and analogies that make sense to all users. This is an interactive session. Plan to bring one course to work from -- a course you've delivered, advised on, created in your mind or plan to propose to your supervisor and team. We'll discover solutions for your immediate needs. We will examine a variety of ways to structure online environments based on how content is delivered in person or hybrid. Our discussions will include some of the challenges common within the industry. You will be given examples of templates and LMS course structures to share with your users along with language to get buy-in from leadership. In this session you will learn... Strategies to define how online environments compare to other learning spaces Determine a delivery structure of content, resources, and activities in a logical, uncluttered sequence to streamline access Develop a navigation plan of the easiest paths to access course materials Identify your own cognitive overload to carry that over as you work with faculty and instructors Draft a guide to how a course can be mapped out using graphic organizers Create your own professional development roadmap to upskill your instructional design, development, and support to the next level
