Abstract:

A supportive online learning environment requires the presence of the instructor, but what does that mean, and how do we achieve that? Through intentional planning and smart use of the LMS tools available to us, we can design and facilitate an online course with effective instructor presence, without burning out.

Extended Abstract:

A supportive online learning environment requires the active presence of the instructor, but what does that mean, and how do we achieve that? Through intentional planning and smart use of the LMS tools commonly available to us, we can design and facilitate an online course with effective instructor presence, without burning out or needing to be constantly online.

In this fast-paced session, we'll delve into tips, techniques, tools, and recommended practices for working smarter, not harder to acheive effective instructor presence in online courses, including:

  • Identifying the differences between being logged in all the time vs. being perceived as present and available
  • Research-based recommendations for designing and scaffolding online courses that include strategies for instructor presence
  • Time-saving tips, techniques, and resources for using commonly available LMS tools to boost instructor presence

Time will be set aside at the end for questions and answers, and participants will be encouraged throughout to share their own tips, tools, and experiences either in a live chat or in person (note: depending on the delivery modalities of the session itself).
