Providing students with multimodal learning opportunities may help them develop deeper learning. Learn how to use Adobe Spark Page to create engaging content for your students or have them create their own multimodal projects. Practice creating your own Page and leave with assignment ideas.
Session Takeaways:
In this express workshop, participants will:
-
Identify the benefits of multimodal learning
-
Explore ways to use Adobe Spark Page to create multimodal learning opportunities
-
Create a multimodal web page using Adobe Spark Page
Research in multimodal learning suggests that providing students with opportunities to engage with subject matter in a diversity of verbal, non-verbal, visual and auditory modes may help them develop a better understanding of that content (Sorensen, 2016). Multimodal learning aligns with Universal Design for Learning (UDL) principles (CAST, 2018), which promote inclusive teaching by urging instructors to:
-
Provide multiple means of representation, or various ways for students to take in information and knowledge.
-
Provide multiple means of expression, or various alternative ways for students to demonstrate what they know or have learned.
-
Provide multiple means of engagement that tap into students’ interests and increase motivation by demonstrating real-world relevance, encouraging creativity, and creating opportunities for peer collaboration.
This hands-on session on Adobe Spark Page will help participants put these ideas into practice. Adobe Spark Page provides teachers and students an easy way to combine text, images, videos, and audio-visual content into rich multimodal web pages. These web pages can help tell stories, display research, compile portfolios, and more. After discussing the benefits of multimodal learning, workshop participants will explore a student example of an Adobe Spark Page that takes full advantage of its multimodal capabilities and identify what aspects of this Page they find compelling and why. Participants will then be walked through the creation of an Adobe Spark Page. Beyond learning how to insert images, text, videos, and links into their Page, they will consider how to organize those elements in a way that maximizes engagement.
Note: We encourage participants to create a free Adobe Spark account to fully participate in the session.
