Hit the Mouse Scrolling: Being Prepared to Meet the Needs of a Diverse Online Student Population

Abstract: 

This workshop will allow participants to identify different learning styles and preferences, examine the specific engagement strategies aligned to those learning styles, and explore specific strategies for meeting the needs of our diverse learners in the online modality. 

Extended Abstract: 

This workshop will consist of four parts. The first part will share research-based descriptions of the various learning preferences and styles of a diverse student population in the online modality. Participants will be able to identify patterns in learning preferences and recognize the different learning styles. In the second part, presenters will share specific research-based engagement strategies aligned to individual learning styles. In the third part, presenters will share a sample of a student survey to be dispersed to students during class setup to identify student learning preferences. In the fourth and last part, implementation of strategies and examples will be provided engaging participants in discourse and sharing additional strategies and ideas. Presenters will discuss the potential benefits and implications of implementing different engagement strategies/activities to accommodate a diverse group of students in the online setting. The overall objective of the workshop is to provide participants with immediate strategies to implement in their classes meeting the needs of their diverse learners.
