What's in Your Online Wallet? Embracing Variation as Innovation

Abstract:

Explore the value of embracing a variety of online modalities including "micro innovations" to support faculty teaching and expand both student access and success.

Extended Abstract:

Is there a case for non-standardization in online learning delivery? We know economies of scale can be achieved, student technical literacy might be accomplished faster, and administrative efficiencies gained with one online delivery modality. But can there be value (and affordability!) by embracing a variety of online modalities to support teaching and expand both student access and success? Join a practical conversation about online challenges and breakthroughs led by a veteran of satellite delivery, totally asynchronous online courses (credit and noncredit, from remedial to graduate level), synchronous video streaming degree completion, and two-way video. Creating environments for faculty to experiment with "micro innovations" using a variety of online tools introduces administrative issues yet the return on investment can be sustainable. Come prepared to share your challenges so we can talk solutions.
Goals:
1. Interactive discussion of multiple online modalities strengths and weaknesses
2. Address challenges presented by the group and strategize how to harness which online tools most effectively
3. Introduce concept of environment for micro innovations
