Students Rate Zaption Five Stars: Interactive Videos and Accountability in Online Courses

Abstract:

Build in accountability in your online courses by creating engaging interactive video assignments using Zaption. Students rate these highly and you will, too.

Extended Abstract:

?This Innovative Lab will focus on the development and use of an interactive video app called Zaption in the facilitatorsí online and hybrid university courses. The basic free Zaption app allows users to watch as many videos as they would like; create unlimited video lessons using six embedding features; share lessons with students and fellow teachers; track viewer progress and responses with detailed analytics and copy and edit free video lessons from the Zaption Gallery. A brief Discussion (five minutes) will seek participant input regarding the rationale, benefits and challenges of using interactive videos in online courses.

This will be followed by a Demonstration (20 minutes) of the free video web-based app called Zaption that allows instructors and students to quickly add images, text, quizzes, links and more to existing videos from YouTube and Vimeo. The result is an interactive learning ìtourî that transforms video from a passive to an engaging, active learning experience. The Zaption app includes a gallery of pre-made video tours that are ready to use or modify. With Zaptionís analytics, instructors get immediate feedback on how students interact with the content and understand key concepts.

The facilitators will first show a brief two-minute Zaption video tutorial providing an overview of the features of the app. The tutorial will show participants how easy it is to engage learners using any of six different features embedded in videos. Next, an example video clip with embedded questions created by the facilitators will be shown. This sample video will include added text and embedded multiple-choice and true-false items on one of the following: course writing or reading concepts, problematic microskills in writing, student-intern teaching demonstrations, or syllabi content. The facilitators will briefly describe how they and their students are using Zaption in their online courses. Next, the facilitators will demonstrate how to use the analytics function in Zaption to assess their learners. This analytics function can track the number of viewers, the responses, the average viewing time, and the number of viewers who completed all questions. Finally, the facilitators will provide participants with midterm and end-of-course survey data on their studentsí perceptions of interactive videos used in online courses.

Collaborative and interactive group activities. Innovative Lab participants will then be given a handout outlining the steps to creating a Zaption tour. Participants will work in pairs to create a ìlearning tourî from a YouTube video adding one interactive feature to the tour. The six features are: open response, text slide, image slide, drawing, multiple choice, and checkbox questions. Finally, representative pairs will present their interactive video, that is, their Innovation, to all participants. They will reflect on their experience with the learning tour and share with the other participants how they might use Zaption or how their students might use Zaption in their classes.

Specific, identifiable learning outcomes. Participants will be able to:

1. define what is meant by an interactive video.
2. name at least three ways to use interactive videos in online courses.
3. discuss ways that they would use Zaption learning tours in their classes.
4. create a learning tour adding one embeddable feature - text slide, image slide, drawing, open response, multiple choice, or checkbox questions.
5. evaluate the app for their educational purposes.
