The Design and Development of Interactive Formative Assessments for the on Demand Environment

Session Time Slot(s):
Abstract:

This session explores the design and development of formative, stealth assessment opportunities essential to increasing engagement in an on-demand environment.

Extended Abstract:

This session will discuss the creation of interactive formative assessment opportunities essential to increasing student engagement and active learning in an on-demand environment. Focus will be placed on the design and development process of the "Conversations with...Philosophers" series.

Western Kentucky University offers numerous self-paced, non-semester based credit courses to their student population. These courses allow for flexible, just-in-time learning. While these courses provide much-needed learning opportunities to a busy public, designing these courses effectively can be a challenge. Student-to-student interaction is often not possible in these courses due to students being at different points in the course, thus it become even more important to provide quality, interactive content to these students in order to keep them engaged.

To increased student engagement in the On Demand environment, members of the instructional design staff collaborated to create interactive formative self-checks using Adobe AfterEffects and Articulate Storyline. These are fun, short interactive activities that allow the learners to gauge their understanding of the course materials while simulating a conversation with a philosopher.

In this session, we will show these activities, describe our design/development process including the identification of opportunities for these activities, the usage of technology to create the activities, the scalability of the activity structure, as well as the challenges faced in the design process.

The audience will be encouraged to share their ideas for these simulations/activities, develop a design plan for these activities including a storyboard and task analysis, and describe the challenges they may face when trying to build these interactions.
