A newly-formed design team at Wichita State University explains the management and production strategies to create pedagogical and technical training videos for faculty and students.
In an effort to better train students, faculty, and staff at Wichita State, the Instructional Design and Technology team created a library of "Just in Time Trainings." These 30 second to 4 minute videos cover a variety of topics including:
ï Instructor/Student Tech Training: Technology-based videos that walk viewers through answers to FAQs about the Blackboard LMS and other educational tools used at WSU.
ï Instructor and Student Support: Support-based videos that advertise and explain student support opportunities for instructors and students.
ï Pedagogy Trainings: Videos written and produced by experienced online faculty and instructional designers, these videos focus on the pedagogical side of online instruction, including topics like "Writing Course-Level Objectives" and "Using Announcements Effectively."
ï Star Professors: These videos highlight our exceptional online faculty in an effort to advertise a diversity of online faculty expertise and knowledge.
The wide variety of these "Just in Time Trainings" bridge the gaps in training between technology, pedagogy, and institutional support. This session will focus on the purpose, process, and creation of the "Just in Time Training" library.
In our Innovation Lab, we will highlight the management of a video production project and will provide training on our process. Because this process requires at least 3 steps, participants will be split into groups and given guided examples on each piece of the puzzle.
This experience would be especially beneficial to small university staff, new instructional design teams, and/or institutions with few video resources. At the end of the session, our participants will receive access to our growing bank of videos for inspiration and reference.
